What to do when someone dies

You’re not alone. We’re here to help—gently, respectfully, and with care.

We know that when someone close to you dies, it can feel as though the world stops. Even if it was expected, it’s hard to know what to do first. Please be reassured: we are here to guide you every step of the way.

This page explains the steps you may need to take depending on where the death has occurred—and how Perry & Phillips will support you from the very first call.

If Someone Has Died at Home or in a Care Home

Please call us as soon as you’re ready on 01746765255.
We are available day and night, every day of the year.

Once the doctor or a medical professional has confirmed the death, we can attend promptly to bring your loved one into our care. We aim to arrive within 40 minutes to 1 hour of your call, depending on location.

That said, there is no need to rush.
We always advise families to take as much time as they need. You may wish to sit with your loved one for a while, gather close family members, or simply pause and reflect. We will wait for your call when you feel ready.

“Some families find deep reassurance in having time at home with their loved one. If you wish, we can support you in making your home their resting place for a little longer.”

We can provide guidance and support if you’d prefer for your loved one to remain at home for a period of time. We’re here to help facilitate that, if it’s something that feels right for you.

If Someone Has Died in Hospital

If the death has occurred in hospital, your loved one will usually remain in the hospital mortuary until the necessary paperwork is completed.

Before we can bring them into our care, the medical certificate of cause of death must be issued, and registration of the death must be completed. This process is explained by the hospital bereavement office, and we are happy to talk you through it too.

Once the death is registered, we can arrange to bring your loved one into our care and begin discussing funeral arrangements at your pace and in your preferred setting.

What Happens Next?

No matter where the death occurs, once your loved one is in our care, we’ll arrange a time to speak with you—either at one of our funeral homes in BridgnorthHighley, or Cleobury Mortimer, or in the comfort of your own home.

We’ll talk gently through what comes next:
